About Joy Turner

“Being able to understand animals has been with me my whole life. I was born with the two most important qualities to be able to effectively and completely communicate with all species. First, a deep, abiding love for all life and animals in particular; and, second, the belief in animals’ equality with humans. Communicating with all species is a natural ability I was born with, and my parents, instead of teaching me out of it, had the grace to allow it to be and encourage me.
It is through this deep, abiding love, respect and honor that animals have come to trust me to accurately and completely deliver to their humans any message they choose to communicate. They trust that no matter what is said, I will deliver the message exactly as it was given to me; without translation, using the exact words and thoughts, even the exact tone and inflexion if they want me to, so that their humans hear all the nuances of what they have to say.
Throughout my life, animals have always been the primary focus of my life. And I came to realize my life’s work as well as my greatest dream and true passion was to help animals be accepted in their true roles in our lives and the world in general. So about 12 years ago, I began offering my services to animals professionally. Over the years I have honed my abilities with the help of all the animals I have communed with and can now speak with all levels of Beings – personality, mental, emotional and Soul – as well as teach others to do the same.
I have discovered that no matter how wonderful a relationship we have with those animals who grace our lives, it can always get better.
I invite you to experience communication at this level and learn how communicating telepathically and empathically can enhance your relationships with all those great and wonderful Beings who share your life.”
Joy hosts the radio talk show, "Talk With Your Animals," on KKNW 1150AM Wednesdays 12-1 PM Pacific time which re-broadcasts on www.animalradio.com. She has hosted the television show Talk With Your Animals, writes columns for IG Times and Modern Dog Magazines, wrote the column, "The Communicator," for allpets.com magazine, and is the author of the book series, "The Spiritual Principles of Consciousness and Manifestation." (Book I - Living Happily in 3D - is available for order in your local book stores.) She offers private and group communication and energetic sessions, seminars, animal communication playshops, healing energy playshops and does benefits for numerous animal groups. She has been interviewed for magazine, newspaper, and radio shows internationally.

Meet the horses  who will 'talk' with Joy Turner about their feelings of bit vs bitless:

Mina - a 29 year old mare in the UK.  Her rider, Caitriona  began riding Mina bitless to prepare for her upcoming ride across India to raise awareness and funds for abused animals.

Mina, a 29 year old ex racehorse, loves the Nurtural Bitless bridleHere is an update from October:

Just keeping you up to date, I rode Mina bareback and bitless Yesterday and she went beautifully, "on the bit" the whole time. I find it's much easier to give subtle aids with this bridle and my downward transitions are much better as she isn't able to lock her jaw.

Background: I share Mina with three other girls who do one or two days a week. We think that Mina is an ex-racehorse, Her owner bought her from the riding school she was working in 26 years ago in south London. Mina actually came over from Ireland with no history but she bucked off anybody who put their leg on her while riding. Her owner said that Mina was obviously used to jumping and galloping when she got her and that along with her previous hatred of feeling the riders leg led us to conclude that she must have been a racehorse. When Mina moved to the yard she is in now her owner actually rode her the 15kms along highways from south London to the north London/ Hertfordshire yard we're at now. Her daughter Mali is also at the yard but has a much calmer temperament despite being a chestnut mare!

Plans to ride bitless across India

In October 2008 Caitriona O’Leary and her Mewari stallion, Chandra, will be raising money for TOLFA by riding the old nomadic trail from Udaipur to Pushkar ka Mela: the biggest camel fair in the world. The ride will see them cover some 400kms over desert roads and dusty tracks. Economic growth has not hit the remoter areas of Rajasthan and many farmers injure their animals through ignorance and a lack of access to medicines. Petrol and break fluid are used as wound ointments and red chili power to treat eye problems. The ride aims to raise enough money for the Tree of Life for animals to run education camps in villages which will have far reaching long term benefits.   Read more at http://www.givemeaning.com/project/pushkar2008

Dell, "The Horse with Hope"

Dell demonstrates groundwork in the Nurtural Bitless BridleDeborah Adams is a Grand Prix dressage rider who has competed, trained, and judged for over thirty-five years.
One of her current horses is "Adaleah" nicknamed "Dell" who she rescued from a field last year. "Dell" is a nine year old Thoroughbred mare. After starting her basic dressage training it was apparent that temperamentally there was something very wrong in that the horse was explosive to the point of being dangerous. With all of her experience Deb could not determine what the problem was until she discovered that Dell's tongue was scarred so deeply across it's surface that it must have almost been severed when the injury occured. What abuse the horse suffered we do not know.

Not wanting to give up on Dell, Deborah researched bitless bridles and found The Nurtural Horse bridle website. She immediately ordered the bridle, restarted Dell's training with it, and reports that there has not been one incidence of violent behavior on the horse's part. She is calm, looks forward to working, and has achieved a high level of performance in the Nurtural Bridle.

Here's what Deb Adams had to say after the interview...

Now that was great today on the radio show!!!  I thought you spoke so eloquently about your passion for the Bridle...and explained how it works very understandably...the physic aspect was most enjoyable and we all need to feel the love and affirmation that we are doing right by our animal charges..
I will start the "Dell Diaries" straight away..
And I need to order a Bridle for my colt...  Thanks for all You do....DEB

Zeus, Off-the-Track Thoroughbred gelding near Toronto Ontario Canada. Zeus jumping in a Nurtural Bitless Bridle
Comments from Stephanie Smith, written 2006:

I am also riding a Thoroughbred gelding named Zeus who loves to jump.  He had been off for a year when I started riding him and I didn’t hesitate to ride him in the Nurtural bridle.  Zeus too, responded positively and even though we have a lot of work to do until he is at his full potential, we both enjoy jumping fences over three feet.

Zeus rides very much on his forehand so it is important I really ride him onto his haunches when we approach the higher fences.  When I rode in a regular bridle with a bit, I remember being asked to sit the horse back on their haunches when approaching a fence and finding only that my horse tossed his head and fussed.  When I ask Zeus to collect I feel him responsively come back onto his haunches and he does not break stride.

All of the experiences I have had with the Nurtural bridle have been positive ones and I have never experienced a poor response to it.  Now riding in a regular bridle feels strange and not as controlled as when I ride in the Nurtural bridle.  Take my word for it when I say that this bridle is a real problem solver for those horses with the over sensitive mouths or just fear of the bit.

They Shoot Horses Don’t They?

Natural Horsemanship Expert Reveals
Five Tips To Stop You Hurting Your Cherished Animal

If asked to describe a horse, the adjectives ‘noble’ and ‘majestic’ are hard to beat. So long have these magnificent creatures been a part of our lives that the thought of hurting them is hard to countenance. However, many riders are unknowingly doing just that. Natural Horsemanship innovator Zoe Brooks highlights five ways we can prevent our horse’s discomfort.

 Topic Overview

Fifteen hundred years ago, Atilla The Hun devised a method of putting a piece of metal into a horse’s mouth so his army could ride and control them. This practice of using metal bits is still the standard today. Atilla was not renowned for his kindness to people, and his invention of the horse’s bit is perhaps just as cruel.

It might have taken 1500 years, but the equestrian world is beginning to recognize that using a traditional metal bit is painful for a horse. ‘Bitless, Treeless and Barefoot’ is the new trend in horsemanship and its popularity is growing rapidly. One of the chief exponents of this method is Zoe Brooks, designer of the Nurtural No-Bit Bridle, who here gives five key tips designed to stop people hurting their horses.

1.   A horse’s mouth is very sensitive so a metal bit can be an instrument of torture. “A bitless bridle cradles the horse’s head, allowing the rider to apply gentle, consistent pressure to guide the horse,” says Zoe.

2.   Heavy hands hurt. “Many riders think they need to tug sharply on the reins, but this causes pain, can cause health issues and lead to behavioral issues as well.”

3.   Try being ‘tree-free.’ “A treeless saddle is more flexible and comfortable for both horse and rider. And remember, saddle size counts – don’t just buy the first one you see, or the cheapest.”

 4.   Not all horses need shoes. “It depends on where and how you ride, but your horse may well not need shoes. Many experts believe that an unshod hoof pumps blood better and thus leads to a healthier horse.”

5.   Reward your horse. “Bond with your horse and hang out with it in the round pen. Teaching your horse to obey through fear doesn’t get you anywhere. Simply petting your horse is a great way to reward it.”

Perhaps Atilla’s – dare we say it – reign over the horse is finally over and a thoroughly modern, caring method is taking over. As Zoe rightfully points out; “What horse owner wouldn’t want to find a more nurturing and gentle way to work with the horse they love?”
