Cheryl Van Herk, Broken Arrow Ranch, Caledonia, ON

www.brokenarrowranch.ca

My name is Cheryl Van Herk and I've been loving and riding horses for over 30 some odd years.  I've spent hundreds of dollars on bits and could likely write a book on my experiences with them and the frustrations my horses and I have had with them.  Thankfully I saw your booth a few years ago at the Royal and a seed was planted in my mind.  A year later I purchased two of your Nurtural bridles, one for our Shetland and one for our mares.

Children and ponies do great in a Nurtural Bitless BridleThe Shetland was barely green broke when we took him home and he hated the bit.  With the Nurtural bridle, he caught on quickly and seems to be thankful for it and shows it in his good behavior as the kids ride him.

We have a green broke mare and she panics when someone takes hold of her mouth using a bit.  The Nurtural bridle is exactly what she needs.

One of our other mares  has always had mouth issues, sporting a large scar on her tongue-perhaps from a previous owner’s rough hands with the bit.  She shows her disdain by resisting the bit, becoming stiff.  She avoided her left lead and was always trying to pull the reins out of our hands.  Once we put the Nurtural bridle on, she stopped pulling and is much softer and allows herself to yield and bend.  She's used in many lessons and the hands of inexperienced riders don't bother like they once did and so she is not souring!

I am a certified riding instructor with the Certified Horsemanship Association in both the western and english disciplines and enjoy passing my knowledge on to others.Cheryl Van Herk coaches in the Nurtural Bitless Bridle

My husband and I founded Broken Arrow Ranch, a Non Profit Organization here in Brant County.  Here is a brief description of what we do:

Broken Arrow Ranch(B.A.R.) serves all children between the ages of 5 and 18. Being a kid in this day and age is tough enough. Roughly 80% of our kids are considered disadvantaged. To B.A.R., the word "disadvantaged" takes on many shapes and forms: mental, physical, emotional, and functional. The remaining 20% of kids we work with are simply kids who don't have access to horses through any other means. It has been our experience that as "healthy" kids play and grow beside "broken" kids, they are both encouraged to have a greater appreciation and understanding of others. It also brings hope to the spirit of wounded kids to believe they too can have hope for the future.

What makes our program unique is that most of the horses that live on the ranch have been rescued from abuse or neglect. These special horses, each have their own stories of  hope and are paired with one leader and one child for a 90 minute private lesson. The lessons are flexible, allowing that time to best serve the unique needs of the children. Instead of being lost in a group, each child is nurtured by a leader who shares in his or her individual tears and victories. All of this is done free of charge. It is our hope that through hands-on experience, kids will learn the values of life, family, faith, and trust. They in turn, teach us true resilience and the remarkable wonder of life.

As we work with these children, they've been learning empathy for the horses. They ask us why we don't put bits in our horse's mouths and that is our opportunity to teach them about the benefits of the  bitless bridle.  I hope that these kids who grow up learning to ride with the Nurtural bridles choose to use the same when they someday have horses of their own.

Aside from the Ranch ministry, being a Nurtural Coach enables me to demonstrate to people interested in the Nurtural Bitless bridles, how they are used on our own horses and ponies.

They are also welcome to book private riding lessons putting the Nurtural Bitless Bridle to work for themselves on an experienced horse.  They will find it feels like riding with a regular bit and bridle except their mount will not be fussing with the bit.

I don’t remember exactly how I came to look for a bit less bridle. I have always been interested in trying out new products. I started out making my own unique rope halters and selling them in my area. They were a great hit even before natural horsemanship started gaining popularity.  I tried many things such as going barefoot, treeless saddles, riding in halters and even bareback but there are always new and exciting things out there.

I had first heard of this type of bitless bridle over two years ago and finally acquired one in march of 2007. From that moment on there was no going back. Young horses I worked with automatically had brakes and turning as if they had been born and raised in this bridle. My old mare whom I rescued no longer wheezed when a bit was placed in her mouth and coughed when you asked her to stop. Because of this bridle she can be ridden almost every day.  It has been a big influence on my riding students as well as my friends and myself.  Anyone who rides my horses rides in this bridle and I encourage everyone else that I know to ride in it too. With less hands and more seat it gives every horse a break. Once the owners get over the skepticism of a bitless bridle of course they come to the light and realize change is a good thing.

I am a certified equine massage therapist and student of the online equine science from the university of Guelph. I work with horses and people every day helping to bring an understanding of how humans and horses can work together in harmony. Future endeavors include traveling to Oklahoma to complete a course in horseshoeing and completing her online courses. I am a leader and member of the local 4H association and member of the Essex county carriage driving club. I am always around to help others with anything horse related, English, western or driving and would be glad to help you with trying out Nurtural bridle at your facility.

H.A.T.S - Horse Alternative Therapeutic Services

I adopted a 15 year old Standardbred mare for our program. She came with a western bridle. When ridden she pulled and drooled. I tried many different bits, even a rubber one - and not much improvement. I had purchased a bitless bridle at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto, so we tried it. She was like a different horse! No more pulling, no more drooling, even easier to control - no more fighting her.

I teach therapeutic riding in Pelham. We have 4 horses. As our riders are handicapped and somewhat nervous they tend to pull on the reins. The Nurtural Bitless Bridle seems to work best for horse and rider.

We have switched 3 of 4 horses to bitless.

The volunteers especially appreciate not having to warm bits up and cleaning them!

My first experience with the Nurtural Bitless Bridle came when I was searching for something to try with my adopted gelding because he hated every bit.  He would throw his head up when he saw the bit coming.  After researching many options I came across the Nurtural Bitless Bridle and liked what I saw.  Our gelding loves it!  I now use the bitless on all my of my horses and will never use a bit again.

I am currently a natural hoofcare farrier, going to become an equine mnassage therapist this winter, and I train horses.   We have a small farm with a round pen we work in.  I am asked questions about horses and the  bridle all the time, and show everyone the Nurtural Bitless Bridle.

Rachel's Experiences:

I consider the Nurtural Bitless Bridle to be a critical component in my continuing quest to broaden and deepen my relationship with my horse friends. I have felt that the bit was more harsh than what my friends and I needed to communicate, and was a crutch for me to ride as effectively with my seat and legs.

When I used the Nurtural Bitless Bridle for the first time, he "thanked" me for being thoughtful and sincerely appreciated the gesture of respect. This is a case where escalating the aids was not effective, and a simple act of kindness made all the difference; he is happier and tries harder to understand what I am asking. In turn, it has improved my riding, and therefore, our performance. Most importantly, it is a step closer to simplicity and allows us to communicate in a more respectful, harmonious manner.

Wilson Brook Farm 41 Gabriel Woods Road

Born and raised in Holland, Klara’s first word was “paard”, the Dutch word for horse. She began riding lessons at age nine from a dressage veteran, Jan van der Sluijs.

All school vacations were spent as a working student cleaning stalls, grooming and tacking horses for lessons, and riding horses while learning as much as she could.

Klara continued as a working student at dressage and therapeutic riding stables throughout her young life. She participated for several years coaching disabled children on horseback.

Later, working in different parts of Europe as a tour guide, Klara sought out the barns and rode English. After moving to the United States in 1993, she began to study western in conjunction with natural horsemanship techniques.

Klara Vanderwaal offers lessons to all ages, welcoming beginners and advanced riders. Her philosophy is grounded in safe and intelligent horsemanship, focused on establishing a successful partnership between the horse and rider. Lessons are flexible and tailored to each student. Klara firmly believes that each horse and rider team is unique in their needs and learning styles, requiring a individualized approach. Half and full horse leasing is available for intermediate and advanced riders ages 16 and older.

Paul Walker coaches with Nurtural Bitless in Chile and Argentina

Nurtural Horse is delighted to welcome Paul Walker as a Nurtural Coach.
You can also enjoy Paul's unique wisdom in the Bitless Horse Chat Group, hosted by Nurtural Coach and Distributor, Wendy Wainwright, in the UK.
Paul Walker presents workshops in Chili and Argentina

Paul Walker:

I train horses with the Bitless Bridle.

I also  guide horse back riding expeditions between Chile and Argentina through the Puelo Valley and give Gentle Horse Training workshops (amanse) in Chile and Argentina.

I believe strongly in the power of the Horse as a symbol of freedom and authenticity and respecting his mouth has been part of my religion all my life.

I enjoy working with the Nurtural Bit less Bridle because it gives me good control, without forcing the horse and relaxing him to the state I search for  when training.

I live and work in a farm in Pucón, on the ninth Region of Chile, 800kms south of Santiago.

I have 10 horse stalls, one roofed round pen and a big open arena for the first’s rides and 600 hectares of hills on the footsteps of Villarica Volcano.

I also travel to many stud farms and train horses there.  I work Chilean criollos, thoroughbreds, warmbloods quarters and draft horses, of all types and ages and states of training.

I work in Opentravel, one of Chiles biggest horse back expedition companies that sells trips between Chile and Argentina, ridden on bit less horses, and they also sell my workshops as a trainer.

I also sell my workshops with other companies.

I am well known in Chile as a trainer and have a promising opportunity to work and teach in Argentina, a huge market, and I do believe showing and selling the Nurtural Bitless Bridle will help promote respect for the horse and benefit the company.

Hello Friends
Here are my news:
On Sunday (Sept 13, 2009) I am going to be on the front page of the web of Chile´s second largest newspaper, La Tercera, talking about bits, sports, bitless bridles and bitless people

This is the link to an advance of Sundays:
http://www.latercera.com/contenido/683_17149_7.shtml

Also, I am working on the translation of the film "The Horse Encyclopedia" of Alexander Nevzorov, from English to Spanish, which I have been authorized to show for educational purposes by its author.

I hope you like the photos.
It is in Spanish.

All the best

Great photos and audio presentation!  (Zoe)

From Paul Sept 16, 2009:  This is what I say in spanish: (sorry for the mistakes)

"Hello

Amanse is a mixture of many techniques.

It is based on the idea that the horse is a conditioned response animal, that learns with a stimulus and understands when we stop stimulating him, when we give him the space and time, psychological and physical to understand that what he did is what we want him to do.

And based on this psychological principle, together with not introducing anything in his mouth, respecting the horse as an independent being and not thinking that we as humans just for being humans we have the right to force him, hit him and him not complaining, respecting the horse as an independent being, is that I have developed the amanse method that is different from natural horsemanship.

The horse has three different aspects, physical, psychological and emotional, we must go working with the three, and the speed of the educational process will be determined by the least developed of the three. For example a three year old horse can be well developed physically but emotionally he is a kid, we must work with the emotions first.

In the traditional way of training, they don’t mind a thing.

The horse is forced, with ropes, saddled and the rider gets on top.

In the traditional way they think the horse is a muscle that must be exercised and accustomed to the weight of the rider. And in reality no, the horse has his three aspects and we must respect the three.

I have worked horses in show jumper studs and in three or four weeks the horse can be passed to another rider to use, and also in estancias in Chile and Argentina, with horses that have never been touched, that descend from bloodlines that have never been selected, they take much longer, three or four months to get a safe riding horse

There are breeds that develop faster, like thoroughbreds. They are raced at two years old, but Chilean criollos take longer

The bit is totally unnecessary, artificial and has no justification; a horse can do everything without a bit on his mouth, without violence.

The bit represents the fear of man to loose control of the horse; it is like the panic of man besides the strength and power of the horse, that is why man puts the bit in the horse’s mouth.

Initially man put a ring on the horses nose, the same as with bulls, but the problem was that the nose tissue is very  soft and breaks easily, and in bronze age, man didn’t find a better idea that to put the same ring in the horses mouth. And started to work him from the mouth.

There is a new revolution in the entire world to train and ride horses without a bit.

The art of training a horse comes from millennia; it is something that man is doing since Mongolia, since the beginnings of modern history.  So there isn’t only one way of doing it.  "

Wendy Wainwright   Northampton, Northants    E-mail: info@bitlesshorse.co.uk

I have been using bitless bridles on and off for over 15 years, back then there was very little choice in what you could use and mostly I rode with reins attached to a noseband, effective but not very sophisticated. It was my present horse Ember who would under no circumstances wear a bit that inspired me to learn as much as possible about bitless bridles and teach others about them. I find the Nurtural No-bit Bridle™ a versatile and widely accepted bridle by horses. It’s gentle cross over action helps promote effective communication. I am also the founder of the Bitless Horse Association designed to support bitless bridle users and promote the use of bitless bridles in every discipline.

Bitless Horse is a bitless bridle advice and hire service. Clients can either hire bridles directly or I can visit them and go through the fitting and introduction of the bridle. I also run Bitless Discovery Days for the full bitless experience. I am available for instruction, my approach to this is different to other trainers, my methods work on the basis that everything is interconnected so peak performance cannot be reached if there are problems in other areas, with great emphasis placed on the relationship between horse and rider. Bitless bridles are an essential part of this process.
